2016 was really a boon for most of the people in India. It was the year when JIO was introduced. They reduced the traffic rates of the internet to a very low price and it was a game-changer in the telecom industry. More and more people in India started having internet facilities. One industry that got a sudden increase was UPI payments because it made people's lives easier. The United Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar Know Your Customer (KYC) systems are undoubtedly two of the biggest things which got very famous. More and more people across the country started using it because it made bank transactions very simple. But we know that even the moon has marks. Due to online transactions, online frauds were also increasing at an alarming rate in India, many people were getting fooled. In this blog, I have written the various ways these fraudsters are using to fool people so that next time you come across such a situation you will be alert.

  1. Army Merchantile Scam

If you buy and sell products via online classified portals such as OLX and Quikr, or rent your house on Magic bricks you need to be careful while dealing with people claiming to be a part of the Indian Army. They generally will tell you that they are posted in a very hard location so they can't come but they will transfer the amount of money. First, they will send 1 rupee we code, I received that but after that, they will send the QR code for payment, after scanning the QR code your amount in your account is debited. A lot of people were duped by using this army merchant bank technique.

2. Job Opportunity scams

They will send some messages to your mobile that Amazon, Microsoft, etc are providing job opportunities. You will receive a message with some links. Never ever click those links because there might be the possibility of a Phishing attack. Sometimes they also ask you to enter your bank details on such sites. Never ever do such type of mistake.

3. Matrimonial frauds

Matrimonial websites and apps today have millions of subscribers using their services for a premium. Since the marriage market in India is always booming, fraudsters are always in the hunt for weaknesses in the system that they can exploit. Here, these rouge elements create fake profiles and dupe money from these users after establishing trust with them. This is a common practice in India and something you should be more vigilant about.

4. Online Shopping Scam

In this Scam, fraudsters set up fake online shopping portals with the intention of cheating people. On the website, they display costly products at a very cheap rate. But, after the purchase is made by paying the money, either the fake product is delivered or the product is not delivered at all. Sometimes they even create fake websites on Amazon and Flipkart also. One should check before shopping in sites that whether the website HTTPS connection is secured or not. These websites will not have any return or refund policies and also there will be no customer support team to contact.

While doing any transaction if you are getting confused or someone in a phone call is telling you the steps on how to use a payment app then there are high chances that it is a fraud

ps:- Jamtara on Netflix and Money Mafia on discovery plus app are good wed series to know about how online scams happen in India
